Paul thought. His mind wandered. There were
a number of possibilities. Last year he studied
balloon therapy at a massage parlor and
became more interested in balloons than
therapy. He liked inflating them. But then a
balloon popped; it scared him and he fell down
four flights of stairs. Not since has he been able
to fully close his left eye. “Don’t concentrate
too hard,” Dr. Mecca said, covering Paul’s left
eye. “Read the sixth line from the bottom.“
Paul squinted and said, “A-B-Y-I-C-4-P.” “They
should all be numbers,” Dr. Mecca said.
“Give it one more try.”
